Getting a job in the railway is the dream of crores of youth, but how difficult it is to reach this dream, the latest figures presented in Parliament gives well. In the year 2024, Railways started the recruitment process for 64,197 posts, and 1.87 crore people from all over the country applied for these posts. That is, on an average, about 291 candidates tried their luck for a post.

The data released by the Ministry of Railways shows that competition for some posts was to surprise. For example, about 45.3 lakh applications were received for 4,208 posts of RPF Constable. This means that about 1,076 candidates were in line for each post. About 26.99 lakh people filled the form for 14,298 posts of technician, while 18.4 lakh candidates applied for 18,799 posts of Assistant Loco Pilot i.e. ALP. There were more than 700 contenders per post in popular posts of NTPC category.

Where is the recruitment process?

The scope of the recruitment process was also large. According to the ministry, the process of selection for 92,116 posts is going on at this time. Out of these, Computer Based Examination (CBT) has been conducted for 55,197 posts. These examinations were held in more than 150 cities of the country and in 15 languages. Many posts like ALP, RPF SI, Constable, Junior Engineer and CMA have also been declared.

Technician recruitment has also been worked out rapidly. Out of total 14,298 posts, more than 9,000 candidates have been selected. The ministry says that the remaining vacancies will also be filled in the coming months. Railways have also planned to recruit a large scale for 2025. In March, applications for about 9,970 ALP posts will be sought under CEN 01/2025, while in June, 6,238 technician posts will be recruited under CEN 02/2025.

If you look at the figure of the last 20 years, then the improvement is clearly visible. Between 2004 and 2014, the Railways recruited 4.11 lakh employees, while the number increased to 5.08 lakhs between 2014 and 2025. That is, there were about one lakh more appointments. According to reports, this improvement was possible due to the annual recruitment calendar, fully digital examination system and steps like conducting exams in many languages.
