ICMR Report: The risk of infection is continuously increasing in India. A report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has released shocking figures. According to the report, one out of every nine people in the country is vulnerable to some infectious disease. ICMR has given this information on the basis of data from its Virus Research and Diagnostic Lab Network. How is the infection rate increasing?
According to the ICMR report, out of 2,28,856 samples taken between January and March 2025, infection was found in 24,502 i.e. 10.7 percent. Whereas between April and June 2025, out of 2,26,095 samples, 26,055 i.e. 11.5 percent were found infected. This means that an increase of 0.8 percent has been recorded in the infection rate. According to the report, infectious diseases are continuously increasing in the country and if effective steps are not taken in time, it can cause a major health crisis in the future.
Which infections are at increasing risk?
The ICMR report has revealed that the most reported infections in India include influenza A, dengue, hepatitis A, norovirus and herpes simplex virus. Due to these diseases, the risk of respiratory infections, jaundice, diarrhea and brain related diseases is increasing among people. Regarding the IMCR report, experts say that even though the increase in the infection rate seems slight, it cannot be ignored. It can serve as an early warning for seasonal diseases and new infections. Experts say that if quarterly data of infection is continued to be monitored, then epidemic-like conditions can be prevented in future.
More than 40 lakh sample tests since 2014
According to ICMR, more than 40 lakh samples have been tested across the country between 2014 and 2024. In which infection causing germs have been identified in 18.8 percent of the samples. Experts believe that the main reasons for increasing infection rate include rapid urbanization, overcrowding, lack of cleanliness and climate change, which provide the right environment for viruses and bacteria to spread. It has also been told in the report that cases of infectious diseases are being continuously monitored in India. Apart from this, experts have warned that this increasing trend of infection rate can put a burden on the health system of the country in future.
