
Neelam was born to a Gujarati Indian father Shishir Kothari and Iranian mother Parveen Kothari in Hong Kong. His family was in jewelery making business. Neelam went to Bangkok with her family as a child.

Neelam, who came for vacation in Mumbai, was noticed by director Ramesh Bahl and contacted him and signed him for Jawani (1984).

After his first film, Neelam had a flood of films offers. He acted in the accusation with Nuclear Govinda (1986) and then worked in 14 films with Govinda and his pair became a hit. His biggest hit films are Love 86 (1986), Khudgarj (1987), Murder (1988) and Maktiwar (1989).

In addition to Govinda, he acted in five hit films with Chunky Pandey – Aag Hi Aag (1987), Sin Ki Duniya (1988), Khatron Ke Khiladi (1988), Mitti and Sona (1989) and Ghar Ka Chirag (1989).

The actress also worked in Shah Rukh Khan’s film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998), in which she was VJ at the beginning of the film, she also worked with Salman Khan in ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ (1999).

Neelam married actor Sameer Soni, married in 2011 and has been together since then. Before marrying Sameer Soni, Neelam was married to Rishi Sethia, son of a UK businessman. He was married in 2000, but shortly after he got divorced.

Neelam has not been seen in films for many years but the actress is always in the headlines.
