In connection with the case of gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur, West Bengal, the three accused were presented in the Durgapur court on Sunday (October 12, 2025), where the court has sent the accused to 10 days police custody.
CM Mamata Banerjee’s reaction regarding the incident
Giving his first reaction to the incident of ‘gang rape’ of a medical student in Durgapur, the Chief Minister said, ‘This is a shocking incident. Our stance is that such crimes will not be tolerated at all. Three accused have been arrested and the police is searching for others. No one will be spared.
Police arrested 3 youths on rape charges
The girl, resident of Balasore district of Odisha, was studying in a private medical college in Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal. On Friday evening, some people allegedly gang-raped her outside the college premises. West Bengal Police has arrested three accused so far.
Odisha State Commission for Women (OSCW) Chairperson Shobhana Mohanty on Sunday demanded the immediate arrest of all the accused involved in the gang rape case of a medical student from the state in Durgapur.
Addressing a press conference here, Mohanty said that this is a sad incident not only for Odisha but for the entire country. He said, ‘Soon after the incident came to light, the Odisha government wrote a letter to the West Bengal government requesting it to take immediate action. The Chief Minister has spoken to the victim’s family.
OSCW demands strict action
Mohanty said that she is keeping a close watch on the matter and is talking to the concerned officials. He told that a team from Balasore district has gone to the spot to provide necessary help to the victim. OSCW chief Mohanty, while criticizing the Trinamool Congress government of neighboring state West Bengal, said, ‘Law and order has deteriorated in the state (West Bengal). Three accused were arrested 36 hours after the incident, while two others are still absconding.
He said, ‘I have heard that the accused are from the minority community. I demand immediate arrest of the remaining two accused and strict legal action against all those involved in this heinous act. Mohanty said that she is planning to go to the spot with her team to meet the victim and inquire about her health condition.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan requested CM Banerjee
Meanwhile, terming the incident as ‘disgusting and painful’, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said in a post, ‘It is learned that the victim is receiving medical care. Pray for his speedy recovery. There is no place in the society for such shameful incidents and crimes against women. He called upon West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to ensure fair investigation, prompt action and strict punishment for the culprits of this heinous crime.
Similarly, Odisha Congress President Bhaktacharan Das also condemned the incident and demanded immediate arrest of all the accused. Das told reporters here, ‘I strongly condemn the gang rape of an Oriya girl in West Bengal. Strict action should be taken against the accused. I have also asked my women’s wing to take necessary action to provide justice to the victim.
