Sri Lankan captain Charit Asanka appreciated the century of opener Pathum Nisanka. The ICC quoted Asanka as saying, “I wanted to see a big century and Pathum showed him.
Nisanka was struggling for runs in recent ODIs, with the help of 16 fours off 136 balls, he won his rhythm again by playing a brilliant innings of 122 runs. His 7th ODI century came after a significant innings of 76 runs played in the opening match. His performance made him the best performing player of this series.
Nisanka said, “It’s been a long time for me scoring runs in ODIs, so I am happy that I have been able to score some runs here.” It was difficult to bat during the powerplay and Zimbabwe’s bowlers performed well, but I had confidence in myself.
After Nisanka was dismissed, Asananka herself handled the innings of 71 runs off 61 balls and played an important role in chasing this goal. The captain credited the young players of Sri Lanka to maintain restraint in moments of pressure.
He said, “The young players are doing well for the team. I asked the batsmen to take less risk and score a strong run. He did the same.”
For Zimbabwe, Sean Williams admitted that his team lost some important opportunities that could change the results. He said, “The attitude of the series could be different. It could have been 1-1 equal. Today we lost a chance to become more aggressive in the middle overs. Small occasions create a big difference at the end of the day.”
This 2–0 win is Sri Lanka’s first foreign ODI win after defeating Scotland in 2019, which ended the long drought on foreign soil. Now both teams will focus on the three -match T20 series starting in Harare from 3 September.
