Online Gaming: The online gaming bill has recently been approved by the cabinet. Its purpose is to curb such platforms, which promote online betting and gambling. Through this bill, the government wants to curb the betting apps.
This step of the government has blown the sleep of online gaming companies. The All India Gaming Federation (Aigf), E-Gaming Federation (EGF) and Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports (FIFs) have written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and demanded to intervene on the bill.
Online gaming bill alarm bell
The big officials associated with this industry have also requested to hold an immediate meeting with the government. He says that if the bill passes, then it will cause a lot of damage to Indian users.
According to the report of The Financial Express, Aigf has argued that this will make gamers in the number of crores of illegal betting platforms and operators. Apart from this, it is not less than a danger bell for this fast growing industry, which gives employment to crores of people. Fedshen says that the online gaming industry can also support PM Modi’s 1 trillion digital economy.
Lakhs of jobs at stake
In the letter written to the government, it has also said that by closing the regulated and responsible Indian platforms, millions of players will start using illegal matka network and foreign gambling websites. The security of users will go into the hands of illegal operators who work without any safety measures and taxation.
Experts associated with the industry have also warned that it can pose a threat to 4 lakh companies, 2 lakh jobs, investment of 25000 crores and GST collection of 20000 crores annually. In this bill, online gaming platforms are being brought under a legal framework and fine on betting through digital apps.
According to the gaming federation, online skill gaming is a rapidly emerging sector, which has more valuations and revenue is also more than 31,000 crores. With this, the government also gets a tax of Rs 20,000 crore annually. In the coming time, 20 percent of this sector is expected to grow from Cagr and it can be doubled by 2028. The total number of online gamers in the country has increased from 36 crores in 2020 to more than 50 crores in 2024.
Under this new rule, the ads of betting apps will be completely banned on all digital and media platforms. Apart from this, strict legal action has also been taken against the celebrities and influencers promoting the gaming app.
