The condition of road safety in India is getting very bad. According to the latest report of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), more than 1.72 lakh people died in road accidents in 2023.
This means that on an average, 474 people every day in the country and about 20 people every hour are losing their lives due to road accidents. This figure is not less than an epidemic and shows that our roads are still very dangerous.
The main cause of road accidents
According to the report, over-speeding and worse-dride driving became the biggest cause of accidents. Apart from this, not using helmets and seat belts is also a major cause of deaths. Statistics show that 54,568 motorcycle drivers died only due to not wearing helmets. Not only this, thousands of people lost their lives ahead of time, not using seat belts.
Pedestrians and two -wheelers the most victims
- This report also made it clear that the biggest impact of road accidents was on pedestrians and two -wheelers. More than 35,000 pedestrians alone died in 2023, which is much higher than in 2022. This shows that India’s roads are still not safe for pedestrians and cyclists.
Road safety mission now mandatory
- Experts from institutions like Road Safety Network and Consumer Voice say that the responsibility of accidents cannot be put only on the “human mistake”. The real need is of systematic changes. This should include strict laws, helmets and seat belt rules strictly implemented and construction of safe road structures in cities and villages. Experts also say that road safety will now be considered not just a transport issue, but a public health emergency. Only then this crisis can be controlled.
The target is by 2030 to half death in road accidents
Let us know that India has targeted to reduce the deaths and injuries in road accidents by 2030. For this, it is very important to start a National Road Safety Mission. The situation will be difficult to improve until the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and two -wheelers is not given priority.
