AC Buying Tips: As the heat increases, the first thought that comes to mind is buying an air conditioner. But when 3 star and 5 star AC options appear in the market, most people get confused. The question is simple, which AC will be a profitable deal to buy? The answer lies not just in the price but in the mathematics of electricity consumption.
What is the real meaning of star rating?
The star rating on an AC reflects its energy efficiency. This rating is decided by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in India. The more stars, the less power consumption. That means 5 star AC will consume less electricity than 3 star. However, the starting price of 5 star models is usually higher.
Small calculation, big difference
Suppose you run a 1.5 ton AC for 8 hours a day and use it for about 25 days in a month. A typical 3 star AC can consume around 1.5 units of power per hour while a 5 star model can consume around 1.2–1.3 units per hour.
Now understand the mathematics.
3 Star AC: 1.5 units × 8 hours × 25 days = 300 units
5 Star AC: 1.25 units × 8 hours × 25 days = 250 units
If the electricity rate in your city is Rs 8 per unit, then
3 star bill: 300 × 8 = Rs 2400
5 star bill: 250 × 8 = Rs 2000
That means saving about Rs 400 every month. This amount can reach Rs 4,800 in a year. The extra cost of a 5 star AC may be recovered in a few years.
Which AC is right for whom?
If you use the AC less, like only for a few hours at night, then a 3 star model can also be a good option. But if the AC runs for several hours every day, especially in cities with extreme heat, then a 5 star AC proves to be more economical in the long run.
Who benefits from buying?
While buying an AC, it is not wise to focus only on the initial price. You should consider how long and how often you will use it. In the long run, only AC with low power consumption provides real savings. Therefore, before purchasing, calculate your requirement, electricity rate and usage hours, only then you will understand whether 3 stars is right or 5 stars.
