AI Trainer: While in today’s time, side income is often associated with earning quick money or changing career, 34-year-old Utkarsh Amitabh, who hails from Delhi, chose a completely different path. Despite running his own company and having a strong academic and corporate background, he started training artificial intelligence models. The special thing is that he took up this work not out of financial compulsion but out of deep interest.
Earning Rs 18,000 every hour while living in UK
According to CNBC report, Utkarsh Amitabh, currently living in the United Kingdom, is working freelance with an AI training and data labeling startup named Micro1. For this work he earns around Rs 18,000 per hour. This assignment, which started in January 2025, has reached about Rs 2.6 crore including bonus in less than a year. Despite this, Utkarsh clearly says that money never attracted him.
Not a job, but interest gave me the opportunity
While talking to CNBC Make It, Utkarsh told that he was not looking for a new job. What attracted him to this opportunity was the nature of the work. Training large-scale AI systems was linked to his research in which he has previously been thinking and writing on topics such as technology, human capabilities and decision making in the age of AI. For him, this work did not become an additional burden but an extension of his thinking.
Journey from studies to Microsoft
Utkarsh’s educational and professional journey naturally prepares him for this work. He studied Mechanical Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering and then did Masters in Moral Philosophy from Oxford University. After this, he worked at Microsoft for about six years on projects related to cloud and AI partnerships. During this time, he also published research on how AI can redefine human success and possibilities. Today he is the founder and CEO of a global mentorship platform named Network Capital.
AI training work takes place in the silence of the night
Utkarsh often does the work of training AI models at night, when his one-year-old daughter sleeps. Usually he spends about three and a half hours every day in this work. This involves testing AI models through complex business situations, catching their misconceptions, and redesigning prompts for better reasoning. This is not the task of writing an easy prompt but it is a process of breaking down each problem in hours and understanding it.
Micro1 and the power of expert networks
Micro1 was started in the year 2022 and today more than 20 lakh experts from all over the world are associated with it. These experts help train and improve AI systems for large AI labs and Fortune 100 companies. The company, which has a valuation of around $500 million, believes that as AI advances, the role of high-quality and expert data is becoming even more important.
