ICC World Cup Controversy: The World Cup organized by ICC is the biggest tournament in the game of cricket. The cricket world eagerly waits for this tournament. Cricket fans watch ICC tournaments with great enthusiasm. However, this is not seen every time, because many times decisions are taken not only on the field but also outside. Many times, in controversial circumstances, due to rising political tensions or security concerns, teams have refused to play in major tournaments like the World Cup, whether the entire tournament or a single match. Such decisions have been taken before in the history of cricket, while a similar case is being seen once again before the T20 World Cup 2026.
ODI World Cup 1996: Australia-West Indies refuse to play in Sri Lanka
For the first time in the history of the World Cup, such an incident came to light in the 1996 ODI World Cup. There was a civil war going on in Sri Lanka, the co-host of this tournament, and the situation worsened after a bomb blast in Colombo. However, before the World Cup, India and Pakistan played a friendly match against Sri Lanka in Colombo, but despite this, Australia and West Indies refused to go to Colombo for their group matches.
ODI World Cup 2003: England-New Zealand refused to play
The 2003 Cricket World Cup was jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya. Two cases were reported in this tournament. In the first case, England refused to play against Zimbabwe in Harare, because relations between the two countries were extremely tense. In the second case, New Zealand refused to go to Nairobi and play against Kenya due to security reasons.
T20 World Cup 2009: Zimbabwe’s withdrawal from the tournament
Zimbabwe had withdrawn its name from the ICC T20 World Cup 2009. Zimbabwe had taken such a decision because of the bad relations that had been going on for five years with the United Kingdom. Scotland were included in the tournament from the qualifiers in place of Zimbabwe.
Under-19 World Cup 2016: Australia withdraws name
Australia had withdrawn its name from the Under-19 World Cup 2016 held in Bangladesh. Earlier in October 2015, Australia refused to play the proposed bilateral series against Bangladesh due to security reasons and Australia had adopted the same stance during the Under-19 World Cup.
ICC Champion Trophy 2025: India refuses to go to Pakistan
India had refused to go to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 to be held in Pakistan. Despite Pakistan getting the hosting rights of the tournament, Team India flatly refused to play in Pakistan due to political tension and security reasons. As a result, the tournament was held in a hybrid model, in which UAE was made the neutral venue and India played all its matches there.
T20 World Cup 2026: Bangladesh refuses to play in India?
Bangladesh cricket team has refused to come to India and play ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Amidst the ongoing tension between India and Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is adamant on its decision and wants all its matches to be played in Sri Lanka. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has rejected BCB’s appeal citing security reasons. If Bangladesh’s stance does not change, it may be thrown out of the upcoming tournament. Now it remains to be seen whether Bangladesh changes its stance before the T20 World Cup 2026 or another controversial chapter gets added to the history of cricket.
