Traffic rules violation in Mumbai: The Mumbai Traffic Police has taken action against 65,12,846 drivers who violate traffic rules during the last 13 months (1 January 2024 to 5 February 2025). A fine of Rs 526 crore was imposed in this action, but so far only Rs 157 crore has been recovered. 369 crore is still outstanding. This information has been received by RTI worker Anil Galgali under Right to Information.

According to the information given by the traffic police, action was taken on violation of 26 types of traffic rules under 41 traffic and 1 multimedia department. However, so far only 20,99,396 vehicle drivers have paid the fine, while 44,13,450 drivers have not yet filled the penalty.

Action on flicker and amber lights

47 vehicle drivers who misused Flicker and Amber Lite were action and a fine of Rs 23,500 was imposed. But out of this only 7 drivers paid a penalty of Rs 3,500. The most action was taken in the Marine Drive area, where 32 vehicles were acted upon, but only 2 of these drivers paid a penalty of Rs 1,000.

RTI activist Anil Galgali said, “The traffic police has taken satisfactory action, but due to lack of officers and employees, there is no more effective recovery. There is a need to conduct special campaigns against the drivers who have not yet paid the fine.” According to Anil Galgali, digital notices should be sent for recovery of fine and the process of seizing vehicles of large defaulted vehicle owners should be adopted.
