The government had started the Prime Minister Internship Scheme with great hopes. The objective of this scheme was to provide a practical platform to the youth before employment by connecting them with industries and companies. The target of the scheme was that 1.25 lakh students should complete the internship in the first year but the result was completely opposite. According to the official report, only 2066 candidates could complete the internship, that is, this scheme has completely flopped.
Why did the plan fail? What were the big reasons?
1. Problem of internship location
The offices of most of the companies were in big cities. It was difficult for the students living in small towns and villages to go there. It was impossible for many students to bear the transport, rent and other expenses, which was the reason why a large number of students could not join the internship even after getting the offer.
2- Stipend is less, expenses are more
Many students said that the stipend received during the internship was much less than their expenses, such as the travel and accommodation expenses were much more than the stipend, so the students left the internship midway.
3- Lack of cooperation from companies was also the reason
Many partner companies did not provide timely training nor gave clear tasks to the students. The report revealed that about 4565 students left the internship midway after accepting the offer. This happened because there was a lack of guidance and monitoring from the companies. Some students complained that they were only given basic tasks like data entry, which did not give them the opportunity for skill development, which reduced the confidence in the scheme.
4-The duration of internship was also the reason
Due to one year long internship, students were confused about exams, college and other preparations. Students who were preparing for UPSC, SSC, or State exams were not able to give time to such a long internship due to which they had to leave the internship midway.
