Under a major initiative of the Higher Education Department of West Bengal, the way has now been cleared for the appointment of permanent Vice Chancellors in eight universities of the state. For a long time, these universities were working without regular Vice-Chancellors and at present only interim Vice-Chancellors were performing the responsibilities. On Monday, a senior official of the department said that the state government and Governor C.V. This path has been cleared in the Supreme Court after the consensus reached between Anand Bose.
According to reports, for the last two years there was a conflict between the state government and Raj Bhavan regarding the appointment of Vice Chancellors in many universities of the state. The government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed displeasure over the appointment of interim vice-chancellors by the Governor without consulting the state government. The matter reached the Supreme Court on this issue and finally after the agreement between the two parties, the process of permanent appointments can now begin.
Appointment process under the supervision of Supreme Court
According to media reports, a special bench of the Supreme Court is monitoring this entire matter. This process was started by former Chief Justice U.U. Based on the recommendations of the committee headed by Lalit. At present, the matter of appointment of permanent Vice Chancellors in 13 universities is in the court, out of which the path has now been completely cleared for 8 universities.
Which universities will get new vice chancellors
The name of eminent educationist Ashutosh Ghosh has been put forward for Calcutta University. Whereas in Jadavpur University, former Registrar and Pro-VC Chiranjeev Bhattacharya is likely to be made the Vice Chancellor. Former Vice Chancellor Omprakash Mishra may be re-appointed in North Bengal University, while Arnab Sen’s name is proposed for Raiganj University.
Ashish Bhattacharya is likely to get the command of Gaur Banga University, while Uday Bandyopadhyay’s name has been suggested for Kazi Nazrul University. Consensus has been reached on the names of Chandradeepa Ghosh for Sadhu Ramchandra Murmu University and Abu Talib for Vishwa Bangla University.

Now formal appointment will be done soon
According to an official of the state higher education department, the state government will start the formal appointment process as soon as Raj Bhavan issues the notification of the names keeping in mind the legal process and the instructions of the Supreme Court.
Five universities are still under consideration
An officer has said that no consensus has been reached yet on the names of Vice Chancellors of five other state universities. The hearing for these universities will take place in the Supreme Court, after which the appointment process will start there also.
