86 percent of the American people are against President Donald Trump occupying Greenland. Even 70 percent supporters of Trump’s Republican Party do not want this. After Venezuela, Trump is now preparing to take control of Greenland and has threatened to impose 10 percent tariff on 8 European countries from February. These countries are opposing US control over Greenland and are part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). France and Britain have openly criticized this decision of Trump.
According to a CBS News survey, 30 percent of Republican voters are supporting the US Army’s occupation of Greenland, while 70 percent of voters are against it. Similar figures have emerged in another survey also. According to a Quinnipiac University poll, 95 percent of Democrat Party voters, 94 percent of Independent voters and 68 percent of Republican Party voters opposed the American occupation of Greenland.
Greenland is a semi-autonomous region of NATO ally Denmark. Trump has hinted that he may use tariffs as a weapon in negotiations with Denmark and other European countries over the status of Greenland.
The Foreign Minister of the Netherlands has termed Trump’s tariff threat as blackmailing. On Sunday he said, ‘This is blackmailing, what else is Trump doing and there is no need for it. These tactics are not going to help in convincing NATO countries on the issue of Greenland.
On Saturday, Trump had posted on Truth Social saying that he will impose 10 percent tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Netherlands, Finland and Great Britain from February 1. These countries are part of military exercises in Greenland. He also said that if there is no agreement for the complete purchase of Greenland from the US, the tariff will increase to 25 percent from June 1.
