Most of us think that if we do not have any major disease. Like heart attack, diabetes or kidney problem, we are completely healthy. But a recent large American study has proved this thinking completely wrong. According to a research published in PLOS Medicine in 2025, 9 out of every 10 people in America were found to have at least one symptom of a new type of health problem, called CKM syndrome.
This syndrome is not a single disease, rather it is a combined effect of many diseases. Which includes heart diseases, kidney problems and metabolic disorders. This means that if there is any problem related to heart, kidney and metabolism in the body, then they gradually worsen each other and sometimes these problems start without symptoms. So let us know what is CKM syndrome, which occurs in 9 out of 10 people and how much harm it causes to your health.
What is CKM syndrome and why is it dangerous?
The American Heart Association (AHA) gave the CKM syndrome a name in 2023 and considered it a new health model, the purpose of which was to explain that obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney failure do not work alone, but together cause harm to the whole body. It is divided into 5 stages, in which the first stage is no risk, the second stage is extra fat in the body, the third is high blood pressure, high sugar or decline in kidney function, the fourth is the risk of heart disease or hidden disease and the fifth is heart disease, metabolic or other kidney related problems.
This syndrome is so dangerous because its diseases promote each other rapidly. According to a research, if a person has more than one CKM factor, his risk of death increases by 22 percent and the risk of heart-related death increases by 37 percent.
How much harm does CKM syndrome cause to your health?
Today’s changing lifestyle is giving rise to CKM syndrome. People walk less, eat outside food, remain under stress, get less sleep and do not exercise. All this gradually brings internal changes in the body. Nothing is felt in the beginning, but gradually the effect on heart, kidney and blood sugar starts appearing. In such a situation, if timely attention is not given, then CKM syndrome causes harm to health in many ways. This can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, insulin dependent diabetes, sudden heart failure or cardiac arrest, swelling in the body, weakness and fatigue, frequent hospital visits and deterioration in the quality of life, due to CKM syndrome.
Symptoms and prevention of CKM syndrome
Your body gives you many signals, such as increased fat around the stomach, increased blood pressure, fatigue or laziness, slight increase in blood sugar, swelling in the ankles, sleep disturbances and constant stress. If any of these symptoms are with you, then you may already be in some stage of CKM syndrome. In such a situation, to avoid this, you should start walking, climbing stairs or doing light yoga for at least 30 minutes every day, this will keep your blood sugar, blood pressure and weight balanced.
Apart from this, eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and pulses. Stay away from fast food, sugar and fried food. Adopt Mediterranean diet and DASH diet. Waist size is a major indicator of CKM syndrome. If the stomach is protruding, then be careful. Start getting your blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, creatinine and urine tested every 6 months. 7-8 hours of sleep every day and mental balance is very important. Meditation, music or yoga can reduce stress.
