Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has retired after an illustrious career of 27 years. NASA announced on Tuesday (January 20) that his retirement is effective December 27, 2025.
Praising Sunita Williams’ legacy, NASA official Jared Isaacman described her as a leader of human spaceflight. He said their contributions to science and technology have strengthened the foundation for the Artemis mission to the Moon and future trips to Mars and their achievements will continue to inspire future generations.
What did NASA officials say?
“Sunny Williams has been a pioneer in human spaceflight, shaping the future through her leadership on the space station and paving the way for commercial missions to low Earth orbit,” NASA Administrator said.
According to a press release issued by NASA, Isaacman said, “His contributions to advancing science and technology laid the foundation for the Artemis missions to the Moon and progress toward Mars, and his extraordinary achievements will continue to inspire future generations to dream big and push the boundaries of possibility. Hearty congratulations on your wonderful retirement. Thank you for your service to NASA and our nation.”
