America has imposed sanctions on Trump critic and Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro. This decision taken by the Trump administration may further increase tension in relations with the Latin American country. This step has been taken by the US after Trump’s statement in which he claimed that Petro did not take any concrete steps to stop the smuggling of cocaine from Colombia to America.
Tension has been increasing between the US and Colombia in the last few weeks. America has also attacked suspicious ships in the South Caribbean region. Trump had claimed that those ships were carrying drugs. However, no concrete evidence regarding this was given by America. Petro had accused Petro of killing innocent people by carrying out air strikes in the Caribbean Sea, after which Trump even called the Colombian President a ‘drug leader’ and a ‘bad man’.
Drugs flood into US from Colombia’s cocaine: Trump administration
In a statement issued by US Finance Minister Scott Besant, it has been said that since President Gustavo Petro came to power, cocaine production in Colombia has reached the highest level. Because of this, there has been a flood of drugs in America and our citizens are becoming victims of this poison. He has not taken any concrete steps to stop this. President Trump has taken tough steps to protect America’s security and has made it clear that we will not tolerate drug trafficking at any cost.
Colombia’s reaction to Trump’s action
Donald Trump had said in the White House on October 23, ‘Petro is not only a failed leader but also an illegal drug dealer who has handed his country over to criminals.’ There was a lot of uproar over this statement of Trump also. A statement was issued by the Colombian government on this and called it a serious diplomatic attack on Colombia.
Gustavo Petro said, ‘America’s action is motivated by political vendetta. Colombia will never bow to external pressure. We have struggled for peace and justice in our country.
