Benefits of Sattu Drink: Many such videos keep going viral on social media, which tell us a lot about health. Recently a viral video advised drinking homemade Sattu shake instead of commercial protein powder. It was claimed in the video that the protein powders available in the market are full of preservatives, which remain in the body for six months. At the same time, a shake made from homemade sattu, milk and dry fruits was said to be much healthier. But scientific data and nutrition facts show the reality of this claim to be something else. Let us tell you about it in detail.
Preservatives present in protein powder remain in the body
First of all it is important to understand that this claim is completely wrong. According to research, most high quality whey protein powders contain little to no preservatives. Even if a small amount of preservative like sodium benzoate is added, the body easily metabolizes it and expels it. International regulatory agencies such as the FDA and EFSA enforce strict rules on the amount of preservatives they can consider safe. A report by Baylor University states that approximately 80 percent of whey protein powder is protein, the remaining portion is lactose, fat and natural flavor. Even if there are preservatives, they are in very small quantities. Not only this, natural foods like berries also contain natural benzoic acid, which the body can easily handle.
How healthy is a shake with sattu and dry fruits?
Now let’s talk about that homemade Sattu Shake. Sattu roasted gram flour, milk or water and dry fruits like almonds, cashews, pistachios, raisins are mixed in this drink. It is true that these ingredients are rich in nutrition as 100 grams of Sattu contains about 26 grams of protein, 60 grams of carbohydrates and 18 grams of fiber. Whereas almonds/cashews/pistachios contain healthy fats, protein and fiber in good quantity. If we talk about raisins, it provides iron and antioxidants but most of it consists of sugar and carbs. That means this drink is healthy, but its nutritional value depends on the quantity in which you are taking it and what is your health goal.
Attention to sugar content is important
Many times the amount of sugar in such “healthy drinks” is not taken into account. Adding raisins, dates or jaggery increases the sugar level significantly. According to a report by Harvard Health, some protein powders contain up to 23 grams of added sugar in one scoop. If milk or juice is added to it, then just one shake can exceed the recommended sugar limit for the day. According to the American Heart Association, the daily sugar limit for women is 24 grams and for men is 36 grams. This means that the shake may seem healthy, but it will not prove to be so good for everyone, especially for diabetic patients.
For whom is it good, for whom not?
If a person wants to gain weight, then a high calorie shake which contains healthy fats and carbs is good for him. But if a person wants to stay slim or control fat, then a shake with less calories and more protein would be better. At the same time, people with diabetes or heart problems should take the quantity of dry fruits and jaggery wisely.
