Team India’s trusted batsman Shreyas Iyer suffered a serious injury while fielding in the third ODI against Australia. His spleen was injured and he is currently admitted in a Sydney hospital. The BCCI medical team has confirmed that Iyer’s condition is stable, but recovery may take time. In such a situation, his availability for the South Africa ODI series starting from November 30 is considered doubtful. The question now is that which player will play at number 4 in Team India in place of Iyer? Let’s take a look at three possible contenders.
Sanju Samson is the strongest contender
Sanju Samson’s name is at the forefront to replace Iyer in the team. Samson has scored 510 runs in the 16 ODI matches played so far at an average of 56.66. One century and three half-centuries are also recorded in his name. Samson did not get a chance in the Australia series, but now that the number-4 slot is vacant, he fits perfectly on this slot. Samson’s natural game is aggressive, but he is also adept at managing the innings. His wicketkeeping ability can prove to be a bonus for the team.
Tilak Verma may also get a chance
Tilak Verma is the rising star of Team India in recent times. He impressed everyone by batting brilliantly against Pakistan in the Asia Cup final. Although his experience in ODI is still less. So far he has scored 68 runs in four matches, but his confidence and strike rotation make him special. If the team management gives him a chance then he can provide stability to the team at number-4.
Riyan Parag, option as all-rounder
Riyan Parag also cannot be ignored in this race. Parag can contribute in bowling along with batting. He has played one ODI and nine T20s for India. His domestic performance has been excellent and he can provide a balanced option to the team. If the team needs an additional bowler, Parag can prove to be a useful selection.
