Longest Test Match: Test cricket has always been called a “game of patience”, but do you know that sometimes this patience lasts even for 10 days? Yes, there have been some test matches in the history of cricket which were played for more than a week, but still the result was a “draw”. Let us know about the longest matches in Test history, which are still recorded in the record books.
South Africa v England – 10 days (Durban, 1939)
The longest match in Test history was played between South Africa and England on 3 March 1939 in Durban. This match lasted for 10 days and still ended in a draw. Actually, this was a “timeless test”, that is, there was no fixed date for the end of the match. This match was going to continue till the result was declared, but the English team had to catch a plane to return home. Therefore the match had to be abandoned midway.
West Indies v England – 9 days (Kingston, 1930)
Earlier, in the Test played between West Indies and England on 3 April 1930, the battle of ball and bat lasted for 9 days. Both the teams scored like mountains, but so much time passed that no result could be found in the match. This match became the most talked about match of that era.
Australia v England – 8 days (Melbourne, 1929)
In this match played in Melbourne on 8 March 1929, Australia defeated England after an 8-day battle. At that time, there were many great players in the England team, but Australia’s batsmen performed brilliantly and achieved this historic victory.
Australia v England – 7 days (Sydney, 1912 & 1924)
There were two such matches between England and Australia on Sydney soil which lasted for 7-7 days. England had won the match played in the year 1912. Whereas in 1924, Australia made a brilliant comeback and won the match.
