The Central Government has appointed Justice Surya Kant as the 53rd Chief Justice (CJI) of the country. The Justice Department of the Union Law Ministry made this formal announcement. Now he will take oath on 24 November 2025 and succeed the current CJI Justice B.R. He will replace Gavai, whose tenure ends on November 23.

Supreme judge of the country will remain for 15 months

Justice Surya Kant’s tenure will be about 15 months. He will retire on 9 February 2027 on completing the age of 65 years. Many important judicial decisions are expected from him during his tenure.

From the village to the highest court of the country

Justice Surya Kant’s life is full of both struggle and inspiration. He was born on 10 February 1962 in Petwar village of Hisar district, Haryana. His family was associated with education. Most of the people in the family were teachers. Suryakant, who came from an ordinary background of the village, studied till 8th class in the village itself. He saw the glitter of the city for the first time when he reached Hansi town of Hisar to appear for the 10th class examination.

Start of studies and career

In the year 1981, he completed his graduation from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar. After this, he obtained a law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1984. Famous freestyle wrestler Geeta Phogat and actor Jaideep Ahlawat have also completed their studies from this university. After obtaining his degree, he started practicing law from the district court of Hisar. Gradually, he started being recognized as an honest, sharp and sensitive lawyer.

More than 20 years of judicial experience

Justice Surya Kant has more than 20 years of experience as a judge. He has given many historic and society-oriented decisions. His working style in the court is considered calm, clear and fair. He always gives priority to sensitivity along with justice.

He served as a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and later became the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. During his tenure, many efforts were made to bring the justice system closer to the common people.
