Indian women’s cricket team created history and won the World Cup for the first time. Ended 52 years of drought
India created history by winning the title for the first time by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final of Women’s ICC ODI World Cup due to the all-round play of Shefali Verma and Deepti Sharma. Starting the innings, Shefali played an aggressive inning of 87 runs in 78 balls. After this, with her spin bowling, Sune Luus and Marijan Kapp showed the way to the pavilion to the experienced batsmen who scored 4 runs. Amidst the fall of wickets in the middle overs, Deepti, who contributed 58 runs in 58 balls, turned the match by taking five wickets, including South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt (101), who scored a century for the second consecutive match.
After being invited to bat first, India scored 298 runs for seven wickets and restricted South Africa to 246 runs, ending the 52-year drought in the history of this tournament. Wolvaardt stood firm from one end till the 41st over, but due to the continuous fall of wickets from the other end, the pressure on South Africa’s batsmen became dominant as the required run-rate increased.
