The film ‘Umrao Jaan’, released in the year 1981, was a very famous film of that time. It was created by Muzaffar Ali and this story was taken from the book ‘Umrao Jaan Ada’ by Urdu writer Mirza Hadi Ruswa.

After 25 years, in 2006, director JP Dutta again made the same story in the form of the film ‘Umrao Jaan’. This time Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played the role of Umrao Jaan. The film also featured Abhishek Bachchan, Sunil Shetty and Shabana Azmi.

Made with a budget of around Rs 15 crore, this film could earn only Rs 19 crore at the box office. Despite the magnificent sets, beautiful clothes and Aishwarya’s beauty, the film could not win the hearts of the audience.

If seen in terms of budget and earnings, Rekha’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ was clearly ahead. The film impressed the audience with its emotions and beauty.

Whereas Aishwarya Rai’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ had glamor and grandeur, but it could not get the success and recognition like Rekha’s film.
