At present, the influence of Muslim leaders is increasing in America, Europe, Britain and Canada. The latest example of this is Zoharan Mamdani, who won a landslide victory in the election for the post of Mayor of New York. In his address after the victory, he said that the future is in our hands. We have uprooted a political dynasty. Before Zohran Mamdani, there have been many Muslim leaders who have left their mark not only in America but also in Europe, Britain and Canada.
Talking about Muslim leaders present in other parts of the world, Muslim leaders like Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Sadiq Khan and Yasser Naqvi have created their own identity. Because of these, the participation and contribution of the Muslim community in multicultural democracies is now becoming stronger than ever.
Muslim woman made history in America
Ilhan Omar is a Somali-American politician who has been a member of the US House of Representatives from Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019. She is one of the first two Muslim women elected to the US Congress (the other being Rashida Tlaib) and also the first Somali-American legislator. Ilhan Omar remains in the headlines because of her statements against India.
Strong voice of social justice
Rashida Tlaib is an MP from Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. Along with Ilhan Omar, she is also among the first two Muslim women to be elected to the US Congress. Rashida Tlaib is a member of the Democratic Party and is known for her outspoken style and clear stance on social justice issues. She speaks openly on issues like poverty, education, climate change and human rights and has become the voice of minority communities.
First Muslim Mayor of London
Sadiq Khan has been serving as the Mayor of London since 2016. He is the first Muslim mayor in the history of the United Kingdom and is considered a prominent leader of the Labor Party. Sadiq Khan has established London as a global, diverse and inclusive city. His policies include environmental protection, public transportation improvement, and promoting equal opportunities. His influence is seen not only in the UK but also internationally.
Increasing presence of Muslim leaders in Europe
In France and other countries of Europe also, Muslim politicians are gradually increasing their influence. Aamya Bouppe is a rising Muslim political figure in France, although there are still a limited number of Muslim MPs at the national level. Muslim leaders have also made their mark in the European Parliament, such as Sajid Karim and Syed Kamal, who have been members of the European Parliament from the United Kingdom. These leaders have strengthened secularism and diversity in political discourse.
Expanding Muslim representation in Canada
Yasser Naqvi is a prominent leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. He is a Member of Parliament from Ottawa Center and has also been a former Attorney General of Ontario. His policies focus on equality, immigration reform, and social welfare. The election of 13 Muslim MPs in the 2025 Canadian elections reflects the growing influence of Muslim political representation in the country.
