Voting for the first phase of Bihar Assembly elections 2025 is on today (6 November 2025). Before that, the campaign had completely stopped at 6 pm on Tuesday (5 November 2025). Now Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act 1951 has come into force in the state, after which no political party or candidate can campaign for the next 48 hours. This peace period will remain in force till the end of voting.

The purpose of Section 126 is to give voters an opportunity to think and take decisions in a calm environment before voting; when campaigning stops, the public can vote away from any kind of pressure or political influence. This is the reason why under this law campaign activities are banned two days before the elections.

Complete ban on publicity

According to the order of the Election Commission, no public meeting, rally, procession or roadside speech is allowed during the silence period. Candidates cannot use loudspeakers or loudspeakers. Apart from this, making any appeal in favor or against any party or candidate on newspaper, TV, radio and social media platforms is also prohibited. The Commission has also said that the results of any kind of exit poll or survey will not be broadcasted from 7 am on November 6 to 6:30 pm on November 11.

Provision for punishment for breaking rules

If any person or organization is found campaigning during the silence period, strict action can be taken against him. Under Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, the violator can be punished with jail up to two years, fine or both.
