The biggest advantage of DMR-249A is its robustness. It helps warships to face extreme conditions at sea. Warships have to face large waves, heavy loads, harsh climates and high-speed combat operations. For this reason, common steel is not used in making them. For this, steel is used which is exceptionally durable, and reliable. The DMR-249A meets all these requirements and is also much lighter.

The amount of carbon in this steel is very low but it contains a controlled amount of elements like chromium, nickel and manganese. All these elements increase both mechanical strength and stress resistance. Low carbon composition also helps a lot in increasing the steel’s ability to withstand cracks and distortions.

The special thing about this steel is that it is much stronger and at the same time its weldability is much better. Actually ships are assembled in sections. At the same time, large structures require strong, seamless welding. This steel ensures that the hull and internal frame remain strong even under high stresses.
India’s self-reliance in defense sector
The development and production of DMR-249A in India has proved to be a milestone in the defense manufacturing of this country. Earlier, this type of steel had to be imported at very expensive prices, due to which the dependence on foreign suppliers increased significantly.
This steel is used in the hull and internal structure of warships of the Indian Navy. A variant of this, DMR-249B, is specifically used in critical high load areas such as flight decks of aircraft carriers.
Let us tell you that only DMR-249A and DMR-249B were used in India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. Not only this, the same steel has also been used in other warships like INS Kiltan, INS Nilgiri, INS Arnala and many ships of the modern frigate and corvette programs of the Indian Navy.
