Sleeping in fetal position, i.e. bending the knees and hugging the pillow, is considered to be the most common position. People who sleep in this posture are usually sensitive, emotional and affectionate. They may look tough on the outside, but have a very soft heart on the inside. This position reduces snoring and provides relief from back pain, hence it is also beneficial for pregnant women. However, if the body shrinks too much, there may be difficulty in breathing.

Log position, i.e. lying straight on the side and keeping the hands down, identifies people who are trustworthy, friendly and calm. By sleeping in this posture, the spine remains straight and the body weight is distributed equally. But if the pillow is not right, there may be stiffness in the neck or tingling in the hands.

People sleeping in yarner position turn on their side and extend both their hands forward. Such people tend to take decisions after careful consideration, but once they decide, they do not back down. This position improves digestion and provides relief from the problem of acidity, especially if you sleep on the left side. However, sleeping with arms extended for a long time can increase the pressure on the shoulders.

Soldier position, i.e. sleeping lying straight on the back, identifies those people who are disciplined, responsible and self-controlled. This position provides support to the spine and balances the pressure points of the body. However, this posture may increase snoring or cause difficulty breathing during sleep.

People sleeping in starfish position spread their hands near the head. They are generally said to be good listeners and loyal friends. This posture does not put pressure on any part of the body and provides relief, but it can increase the problem of acidity or snoring.

Whereas the freefall position, i.e. sleeping on the stomach and hugging the pillow and turning the head to one side, may look comfortable, but it is considered harmful for the neck and back. Sleeping in this posture increases the pressure on the spine and often one feels stiffness after waking up in the morning.

The spooning position, in which couples sleep on their sides next to each other, is considered a symbol of love and trust. It not only gives mental peace, but also increases the level of a hormone called oxytocin in the body, which reduces stress and keeps the mood good. However, sleep may be interrupted again and again due to the partner’s actions.

Some people keep changing sides throughout the night, who are called ‘toss and turn sleepers’. This often happens due to stress, anxiety or an uncomfortable mattress. Constant tossing and turning does not result in deep sleep, which leads to fatigue and lack of concentration the next day.

According to experts, along with your sleeping position, mattress and pillow also play a very important role. For side sleepers, a medium-firm mattress and a pillow between the knees is best. Those who sleep on their back should use a pillow that keeps the head and neck straight, while for those who sleep on their stomach, a thin or no pillow is a better option.
