Uric acid is formed in the body when elements called purines break down. We get purines from food items, such as red meat, some pulses, and sea food. Under normal circumstances, our kidneys expel this uric acid from the body, but in cold weather, when drinking water reduces and physical activity decreases, then this uric acid starts accumulating in the body and increases problems.

We feel less thirsty in winter, but this does not mean that the body does not need water. When there is a lack of water in the body, the kidneys have difficulty in expelling uric acid. Therefore, drink at least 8-10 glasses of water throughout the day. Make a habit of drinking lukewarm water as soon as you wake up in the morning. Things like soup, coconut water, herbal tea or lemon water also fulfill the lack of water in the body.

Purine content is high in red meat, sea fish, pulses and oily and spicy food. These can increase uric acid. Eat such foods in limited quantities. Instead, include green vegetables, salad, oats, and fresh fruits in your diet. Cherries, strawberries and lemon water help neutralize uric acid.

In winter we often remain hidden under blankets and our body’s activity reduces. Due to this, metabolism slows down and weight increases, which is a major reason for increasing uric acid. Do light exercise daily, like yoga, stretching or a brisk walk indoors. Take a walk in the sun for some time in the morning, this will also provide Vitamin D and the body will remain active.

Alcohol and packaged or fast food contain high amounts of purines and chemicals, which increase uric acid. Completely avoid alcohol, soft drinks, and drinks with high sugar content. Eat light and healthy homemade food instead of processed and junk food.

Vitamin C present in lemon helps in removing uric acid from the body. Fruits like cherries and strawberries reduce swelling. Drink lukewarm lemon water in the morning on an empty stomach. Try eating a bowl of cherries or strawberries every day.

Stress and obesity both affect uric acid levels. Do regular meditation and pranayam. Eat a balanced diet and avoid sitting for long periods of time. If you feel swelling, pain or redness in the joints, it can be a sign of gout. Do not take painkillers without doctor’s advice. Get tested on time and keep checking the uric acid level regularly.
