Voting in the first phase of Bihar Assembly elections 2025 has created a new history. In the voting held on Thursday, the state has recorded the highest ever voting rate of 64.66 percent. This is the highest figure in the electoral history of Bihar, leaving behind all previous records.
According to the Election Commission, the voting took place in a peaceful and festive atmosphere, where extraordinary enthusiasm was seen among the voters.
The first phase took place under the strict monitoring of the Election Commission.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi personally monitored the entire voting. This time, for the first time, 100 percent live webcasting was arranged at all 45,341 polling stations in the state.
The voting process was reviewed by directly communicating with the District Magistrates and observers from the Commission’s control room. In this phase, about 3.75 crore voters exercised their franchise on 121 assembly seats in 18 districts.
International observers praised the first phase
This time Bihar was also in the news at the international level. Under the International Election Visitors Program (IEVP), 16 representatives from six countries – South Africa, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Belgium and Colombia – witnessed the voting process firsthand. These foreign observers praised the election system of Bihar and said that it is an excellent example of organized, transparent and participatory democracy.
New facilities given to voters at polling stations
In this election, the Commission took many new initiatives to improve the experience of voters. This time, colorful photographs of candidates were given on EVMs, mobile deposit facility at polling stations and newly designed Voter Information Slips (VIS). Arrangements for wheelchairs, e-rickshaw services and volunteer helpers were also made for disabled voters, so that no citizen is deprived of his rights.

- 62.04% voting in 1990 – Lalu Prasad Yadav came to power for the first time.
- 61.79% voting in 1995 – Lalu Yadav returned to power again.
- 62.57% voting in 2000 – There was a close contest between Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav and ultimately Rabri Devi government came to power.
This is not a coincidence but an indication that when people come out of their homes in large numbers in Bihar, there is a change in the power equations.
Increase in politics after the first phase
After heavy voting in the first phase, both NDA and Grand Alliance have declared it in their favor. NDA says that such encouraging voting is a proof of public confidence in development and stability. Whereas the Grand Alliance says that this voting rate is a sign of change, the public now wants a new government.
Bihar will set an example of democracy
If we look at history and statistics, whenever the voting percentage has increased in Bihar, there has been a new turn in politics. This time, a record 64.66% voting took place in the first phase only. This means that this figure may go up further in the future. Now it remains to be seen in whose favor this enthusiasm goes. In the form of people expressing confidence in the name of development or in the form of a new wave of change. One thing is certain from the first phase that in the coming phase, Bihar has once again set an example of democracy.
