Diabetes has become a very common disease in India today. Crores of people in India check their blood sugar level daily so that they can manage their health. But the method that was used till now. That is taking a blood sample by pricking a needle in the finger. It was quite painful and troublesome. Many times tests have to be done 3 to 4 times a day, which not only causes pain but also increases the expenses. Now, to provide relief from all these problems, scientists of IIT Madras have developed a new technology which will make the life of diabetes patients easier. Now patients will be able to test sugar at low cost without using needles. Diabetes patients will get relief from the new device of IIT Madras.

Cheap, easy and low cost sugar test without needle insertion

Researchers at the Electronic Materials and Thin Films Lab of IIT Madras have developed a special glucose monitoring device. This device has been made under the leadership of Professor Parasuraman Swaminathan. This device has been specially designed for diabetic patients so that they can check their blood sugar level without needle, easily and at low cost.

How does this new device work?

Till now two types of methods were generally used. In which the first is SMBG (Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose), in this the blood sample is taken by pricking the finger with a needle. On the other hand, CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring), which gives real-time readings without repeatedly inserting needles, but these are quite expensive and show data only from mobile or separate devices.

Keeping in mind the shortcomings of both, the team of IIT Madras has come up with a new solution. They have created a modular system which has two parts. A reusable electronic unit with a low-power display and a disposable microneedle sensor patch that is applied to the skin. This microneedle patch is very small and measures the sugar level just above the skin. There is neither pain in using it nor is there any need to draw blood.

What is the purpose of this research?

With this new technology, diabetic patients will get rid of the trouble of repeatedly pricking the needle and they will be able to keep an eye on their sugar level more comfortably. MS (Entrepreneurship) scholar L. associated with this project. Balamurugan said that this device can prove to be a game-changer. It not only makes glucose monitoring easy but is also confidential and economical. Now people will be able to test their sugar regularly at home, which will help them understand their health and take timely action. Its benefit in the long run will be that diabetes related emergencies and the need to go to hospital will be reduced. This will reduce the financial burden on the family and patients will be able to manage their health in a better way.
