Many times we wake up in the morning and feel that our mouth is very dry or there are traces of saliva on the pillow. These could be signs that we were breathing with our mouth open at night, that is, we were breathing through the mouth instead of the nose. This may sound normal, but doing this continuously can affect your health in many ways. Generally our body is made to breathe through the nose. When we breathe through the nose, the air first passes through the nasal passage, where it becomes clean, warm and moist.
Small cilia and mucus inside the nose prevent things like dust, pollution, bacteria. Due to this, the air reaching the lungs is better for the body, but when for some reason it becomes difficult to breathe through the nose, the body automatically starts breathing through the mouth. If this habit continues for a long time then it is called mouth breathing. In such a situation, let us tell you today why some people breathe through the mouth instead of the nose and what effect it has on health.
Why do people breathe through the mouth instead of the nose
1. Nasal congestion – The nose gets blocked due to cold, allergy, or sinus problem. In such a situation, it becomes difficult to breathe through the nose, so the body starts using the mouth.
2. Enlarged adenoids or tonsils – In children, adenoids or tonsils often become enlarged, due to which the nasal passage gets blocked. Due to this also people breathe through the mouth instead of the nose.
3. Disturbance in the structure inside the nose – If someone’s septum is crooked or there are polyps in the nose, the air passage can be blocked. Because of which people breathe through the mouth instead of the nose.
4. Jaw or facial structure- The structure of the face or jaw of some people is such that the mouth remains slightly open, which makes breathing through the mouth easier.
5. Habit or behavior – Many times, this problem also arises due to the habit of sucking the thumb in childhood or keeping the mouth open repeatedly.
6. Sleep Apnea – This is a sleep related problem in which breathing becomes intermittent while sleeping. Even in this situation, people start breathing with their mouths open.
What effect does it have on health?
1. Dryness of mouth and bad breath – Saliva keeps our mouth clean and moist. When we breathe through the mouth, the saliva dries up, due to which bacteria start growing and the breath starts smelling.
2. Teeth and gum diseases – Saliva contains minerals that keep teeth strong. Dryness of mouth can cause tooth cavities and inflammation of gums. If this happens for a long time, teeth may also become loose.
3. Sleep related problems – Mouth breathing reduces the quality of sleep. This can cause diseases like sleep apnea, in which breathing becomes intermittent at night and the brain does not get complete oxygen. This causes fatigue, irritability and difficulty concentrating during the day.
4. Affecting the growth of face and teeth in children – If a child continuously breathes through the mouth, his face may become long and jaw thin. This can cause the teeth to become crooked and may require orthodontic treatment in the future.
5. Brain fog and fatigue – Breathing through the mouth reduces the amount of oxygen in the body, due to which the brain does not function properly. Due to this, the person experiences lethargy and confusion i.e. brain fog throughout the day.
