In today’s time, back pain has become a very common problem. Earlier this problem was mostly seen in the elderly, but now it has started appearing in the youth and even children. We all put stress on our bodies in some way or the other throughout the day. Be it working sitting at a desk for hours, leaning over a mobile or laptop for a long time or lack of physical activity.

Do you know that not only wrong sitting habit or chair, but also mental stress can be a major reason for your back and waist pain. So today let us tell you how not only bad chair or posture but also mental stress can become the cause of back and waist pain.

How mental stress can cause back and waist pain

Our mind and body are deeply connected to each other. When we go through mental conditions like stress, anxiety or depression, the body feels that stress in different ways. Many times we do not understand that our mental stress is manifesting in our body in the form of pain, fatigue or stiffness.

When we are constantly under stress, a hormone called cortisol starts getting produced in large quantities in the body. This hormone can cause muscle stiffness, strain and pain. Especially in the waist and neck area, this is the reason why people whose mind is under too much stress often complain of back pain or muscle tightness.

How does mental stress increase back and waist pain?

1. Muscle stiffness – When we are under stress, the body puts itself into defense mode. This means that the muscles start to contract, causing strain and pain.

2. Bad posture – Under mental stress, a person often sits slouched, bows his head or leaves his body loose. This increases the pressure on the spinal cord and the problem of back pain becomes more serious.

3. Lack of sleep – People living under stress often do not sleep or do not get enough sleep. Due to lack of sleep, the muscles of the body do not get complete rest, which can increase waist and back pain.

4. Physical activity – When a person feels mentally tired, he avoids walking or exercising. This weakens the muscles and increases the pain.
5. Cycle of stress – Stress causes pain, and increasing pain increases stress further. In this way it becomes a vicious cycle which tires both the body and mind.

Ways to reduce mental stress and get relief from back pain

1. Do regular exercise – Light stretches, yoga and walking reduce both mental stress and physical stiffness. Especially yoga asanas like Cat-Cow Pose, Balasana and Bhujangasana are beneficial for the back.

2. Meditation – Meditating for 10 to 15 minutes daily reduces mental stress and makes the body feel relaxed.

3. Adopt correct posture – Keep your spine straight while sitting or standing. Choose a chair which gives support to the waist.

4. Get complete sleep – Sleeping 7 to 8 hours every day recharges the body and helps repair muscles.

5. Take short breaks between work – Every 30 to 40 minutes, stand up and walk, stretch or take deep breaths.
