Former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath has claimed that spinner Varun Chakraborty is now more important than Bumrah in Team India. Chakraborty was the highest wicket taker for Team India in the recently concluded India-Australia T20 series.
During a discussion on a show on Star Sports, Subramaniam Badrinath said, “The statistics show why Varun Chakravarthy is the No. 1 T20 bowler in the world. He is even more important than Bumrah at the moment. Whenever you are scoring more runs in the powerplay, or have to bowl in the 18th over, Varun is the bowler for you.”
34-year-old Varun Chakraborty has indeed proven to be a very effective bowler in T20 matches. Captain Suryakumar Yadav often brings him in the powerplay and has also been taking wickets on important occasions.
Most wickets for India in 2025
Varun Chakravarthy is the bowler who has taken the highest T20 wickets for India in the year 2025. So far this year, he has taken 26 wickets in 14 innings. Statistics show that he is taking about 2 wickets in every match. After returning to Team India in the year 2024, Varun has played 23 matches, in which he has taken 43 wickets.
World number-one bowler in T20
After returning to the Indian team, he has also got the gift of performing well continuously. He became the world number-1 bowler in T20 International just a few weeks ago. Subramaniam Badrinath says that Varun Chakraborty can prove to be the X factor for the Indian team in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
