Floating poop causes: Have you ever noticed that your toilet sometimes seems to float instead of sinking into the toilet? If yes, then it is absolutely normal. Many people notice this and wonder if this is a problem. Actually, how your stool is behaving in the toilet can reveal some things related to your digestion. Generally, toilet sinks because its weight is more than water. But sometimes too much gas is formed in it or the fat in it is not digested properly, due to which it becomes light and starts floating.

It is not at all harmful for this to happen occasionally. Many times this happens after eating high fiber food, pulses, gram-rajma, cabbage, gas producing substances like soda. But if the stool starts floating frequently, is too sticky, has a strong odor or even causes stomach discomfort, it could be a sign of a digestive problem, such as malabsorption. Let us tell you what this reveals.

What depends on whether the stool will float or sink?

Normal and healthy stool usually goes down the toilet. It contains water, undigested food, bacteria and some fat. Therefore it is heavier than water. But when too much gas is formed in it or fat is not digested, it becomes light and starts floating. A research found that people who suffer from IBS, especially those who have both constipation and diarrhea, had more problems with floating stools.

Common Causes of Floating Stool

In most cases there is no need to worry. The reason behind this are the eating and drinking habits, these include gas producing foods like kidney beans, gram, pulses, cabbage, broccoli and soda etc. On the second number, eating too much fiber, in which suddenly increasing the fiber can cause the stool to become light and on the third number, eating too much oily food, sometimes eating too much greasy food also causes the stool to float. All these are temporary reasons and get cured on their own after some time.

When is there a need to worry?

If the stool is floating again and again, along with these symptoms, such as the stool becoming more sticky or greasy, bad smell, stomach ache, weight loss, then it could be a sign of nutrients not being digested properly.

  • Indigestion of fat – stool is oily, sticky and very smelly
  • Not digesting carbs – stool becomes loose, soft or swollen

Sometimes due to celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, intestinal infection or growth of bacteria, the body is not able to absorb food properly.
