Lip Corner Cancer: Cancer on the lips often initially looks like a minor crack, white spot or non-healing wound, but doctors say that it can be of two different types, one that appears outside the lip and the other, which forms on the inside of the lip. Interestingly, the cancer that appears on the outside of the area where the lips meet is considered skin cancer, while the cancer that appears on the inside comes in the category of oral cancer.

According to Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon Dr. Carol Lewis, it is important to understand the two surfaces of the lips. The outer part is called “dry lip”, which is like skin, while the inner part is called “wet lip”, which is like the delicate skin of the mouth. Cancer occurring in the dry area is mostly caused by the sun’s rays, whereas cancer occurring in the internal area is found to be associated with tobacco, smoking and alcohol.

Most cancers occurring on the lips are squamous cell carcinoma. These are the same cells that cover the surface of the mouth, tongue and gums. The good thing is that this cancer does not spread very fast, but if ignored, it can reach the lymph nodes and even the lungs. According to mdanderson, its five symptoms are as follows.

wound that won’t heal for two weeks

The most important symptom is any wound, cut or blister on the lip that starts worsening instead of healing even within 14 days. Viral ulcers like cold sores heal within two weeks, but cancerous wounds do not heal and keep spreading slowly.

raised or hard lump on the lip

If you notice any small bump, hard lump or unusual thickness on the lips, do not take it lightly. This swelling can be painful when touched. On the inside it looks like a white or red patch, which is a different color from the surrounding skin.

persistent burning, pain, or numbness

Burning, pricking or numb feeling in the lips without any injury can be an early sign of cancer. This symptom often increases when speaking, chewing food or eating spicy things.

changing lip color

If white, red or brown spots suddenly appear on the lips and do not disappear, then immediate examination should be done. The discolored area often spreads over time.

Swelling or change in shape of lips

If the lips suddenly start swelling, their elasticity changes or their shape appears crooked, then this also indicates cancer. This symptom is common in people who spend a lot of time in sunlight and smoke.

Why does lip cancer occur?

  • Excessive UV sun rays (dry lip cancer)
  • Smoking and Tobacco (Wet Lip Cancer)
  • heavy alcohol consumption
  • habit of constantly biting lips
  • weak immune system

How to know whether there is cancer or not?

The doctor first does a physical examination of the lips and mouth. If there is any doubt, a biopsy is done, in which a small sample of tissue is taken and examined. This is the real way to confirm cancer.
