BLO SIR Workload: The second phase of SIR is going on in 12 states and union territories across the country. The final voter list is to be released on 7 February 2026. Meanwhile, Booth Level Officers (BLO) are working under extreme stress due to ever increasing workload.

According to media reports, a senior teacher involved in SIR-related work committed suicide by jumping in front of a train at Bindayaka railway crossing. In his suicide note, he wrote that an officer was continuously pressurizing him regarding the work related to SIR, due to which he broke down.

In Jalpaiguri, West Bengal also, a BLO committed suicide due to work pressure. In Kerala, on Sunday, a BLO, Anish George (44), was found hanging at his home in Payyanur, Kannur. Apart from this, a BLO engaged in the work of Voter List Special Intensive Revision Program i.e. SIR died of heart attack in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan. Let us tell you why the cases of heart attack and suicide are increasing?

Why are cases of suicide and heart attack increasing?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people attempt suicide at the workplace due to various reasons. Same situation is happening with BLO also. There may be some reasons due to which BLOs are taking such steps. In this-

ever increasing work pressure

When the amount of responsibilities exceeds the capacity many times, as is happening with BLOs during SIR, then there is constant stress on both the body and mind. This stress over a long period of time affects the heart and increases the risk of heart attack.

deadline pressure

The fear of not being able to meet the deadline, constant follow-up by officials, mental fatigue of submitting the report as quickly as possible, all this puts a tremendous burden on the mind. Many people are unable to bear this pressure and break down.

Complete imbalance of work and personal life

When work becomes so much that there is no time left for family, rest, sleep and oneself, the recovery of the body stops, mental fatigue increases and the heart becomes weak.

Hormonal changes in the body due to constant stress

In prolonged stress, the body produces stress hormone i.e. cortisol in large quantities. Due to this, it increases heartbeat, causes hypertension, increases blood clotting and disturbs sleep. All these become major causes of heart attack.

fear of mistake and pressure

When there is a fear of reprimand, complaint or suspension for every mistake, a person always remains worried. This anxiety can gradually lead to mental illness, panic, depression and ultimately suicide.

How to handle mental health under extreme stress?

If you ever feel that things are getting out of hand or the emotional crisis is deepening, immediately seek help from a trusted person, expert or helpline. Getting help is real and it really does make a difference. What you can do in this is that if the work pressure starts becoming unbearable, first of all control yourself. Divide the work into small parts. Prioritize what’s important and what can wait, and it’s okay to say no if necessary.
