Who Cannot Donate Kidney: After the defeat in Bihar Assembly elections, disintegration is visible in Lalu Yadav’s family. In the year 2022, when former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Yadav was ill and needed a kidney, Rohini came forward. He had donated a kidney to his father. During that time his step was appreciated in the entire country. However, now that she is angry with her brother Tejashwi, she has given many statements regarding this. Let us tell you who are those people who cannot donate kidneys.
Which people cannot donate kidneys?
Donating a kidney is considered the greatest gift given by any person. For people with kidney failure, a kidney from a living person can provide better outcomes and a longer, healthier life than dialysis. According to the National Kidney Foundation, not every interested person can donate a kidney. There are some reasons due to which a person is not allowed to donate. In these-
serious medical problems
While donating a kidney, your health is considered first. Donation is not allowed if you have any medical condition that could harm you during or after the operation. Some problems are included in this, such as-
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes
- Active cancer or recent history of cancer
- Any serious heart or lung disease that would make surgery risky
Terms related to weight and BMI
Transplant centers also decide on the basis of BMI i.e. body mass index whether a person can donate or not. Some centers have strict rules, while some also look at things like your lifestyle and where the fat is deposited.
BMI category
Less than 18.5 – Underweight
18.5–24.9- normal
25–29.9- overweight
Above 30- Obesity
Too low or too high a BMI can increase the risk of bleeding, infection, or wound problems during or after surgery. Excess weight also increases the risk of diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure in the long run.
Mental health related problems
Donating a kidney is not just a medical decision, it is also an emotional decision. Therefore, a meeting with a social worker or psychologist is also made. They make sure that you are emotionally prepared as well.
They especially pay attention to these things-
- You understand the benefits and risks of donation
- no pressure on you
- If you take mental health medication, you have been stable for a long time
The thing to keep in mind here is that having a mental health related illness does not stop donation. The issue is whether you are able to take safe and intelligent decisions or not.
Need for support system and recovery
After donating a kidney, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks to recover completely. During this time, you need support and a comfortable environment at home.
Support system may include-
- Someone to help – with food, cleaning, driving, or other needs for the first few days
- Emotional support- so that you are not afraid of worries
- Clean and safe environment – which reduces the risk of infection
