Work started due to financial constraints
Well, if you do not know, then let us tell you that Saroj Khan’s childhood name was Nirmala Nagpal. He was born on 22 November 1948. Later she accepted Islam and got recognition in Bollywood by the name of Saroj Khan. Her parents came to India after the partition of India-Pakistan.
The condition of the house was not good, so Nirmala had to work since childhood. At the age of just three years, she acted as Baby Shyama in the film ‘Nazarana’. Gradually, she started becoming fond of dancing, but this hobby came out in such a unique way that even her family members did not understand what was happening.
She used to dance for hours looking at her own shadow.
When Nirmala Nagpal (Saroj Khan) was very young, she used to dance for hours looking at her own shadow. She felt that the shadow was supporting her and she kept pace with it. When she was alone in the room, she would remain lost in her dance for hours.
Seeing this his mother started getting worried. They thought that the girl was having some mental problem. Due to this fear, the family members took him to the doctor, but the whole family was stunned to hear what the doctor said. The doctor said that the girl is absolutely fine.
She just wants to dance. This should not be stopped, but should be allowed to move forward. The financial condition of the house was not good, so the family accepted the doctor’s advice and gave Nirmala free rein to work in the film industry. Saroj Khan herself had mentioned this in an interview.
Faced a lot of sorrow in personal life
She started appearing as a background dancer in the 1950s. During this time, he met the film industry’s famous dance master B. Learned dance from Sohanlal, which proved to be a big turning point in his life. This relationship was not limited to just Guru-disciple. When Saroj was only 13 years old, she married Sohanlal, although Sohanlal was 30 years older than her. At the time of marriage, Saroj did not even know that Sohanlal was already married and was the father of four children.
She came to know this truth when she gave birth to son Raju in 1963. Later she also gave birth to a second child, who passed away after a few months. During this time, Sohanlal refused to give his name to her children, due to which Saroj was heartbroken and the marriage also broke.
New turn in life after separation from husband
The journey of Saroj Khan’s life was not easy, but dance always remained her strength. After separation from her husband, she focused her entire attention on choreography. Despite initial struggles, he made his mark and started working as a choreographer in the 1970s. However, he got his real recognition in the 1980s.
The songs choreographed for Sridevi like ‘Hawa Hawai’, ‘Main Teri Dushman’, ‘Mere Haathon Mein’ made her a star overnight. After this his work with Madhuri Dixit became history. Many songs including ‘Ek Do Teen’, ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’, ‘Tamma Tamma’ still make people dance.
Also won many prestigious awards
Saroj Khan won three National Film Awards and many Filmfare Awards in her career. Filmfare had started the award for Best Choreography after the success of his song ‘Ek Do Teen’. Her second marriage was to Sardar Roshan Khan. Her daughter Sukaina Khan runs a dance institute in Dubai. After traveling a long way in Bollywood, Saroj Khan died of cardiac arrest on 3 July 2020, but her dance steps and hard work made her immortal forever.
