Imagine… a nuclear bomb has fallen on the world. Cities have been reduced to ashes, the air has become poisonous, the land has been burnt and most of the living beings including humans have been wiped out, but amidst this devastation, there is a small creature which neither burns due to heat, nor dies due to radiation nor is shaken by the end of the whole world. After all, what is there in this creature that keeps breathing even in an explosion like Doomsday? This secret surprises even scientists. Let’s find out.
Cockroaches were alive after World War II
The atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II had forced the world to think about how fragile human civilization is. While the radiation spreading in the air destroyed everything from humans to animals, when scientists surveyed the area after this disaster, a shocking revelation came to light that cockroaches were found alive in large numbers. This was no less than a shock for the world.
How did cockroaches stay alive?
Scientists began deep research to understand how cockroaches survived when high levels of radiation could instantly kill humans. The things that came to light in the research raised the cockroach’s abilities to a new level. First of all, it was found that the body of cockroach can tolerate radiation to a greater extent than that of humans. While humans can die at radiation doses up to 800 rad, cockroaches can withstand up to 10,000 rad. This difference is so big that understanding it is surprising in itself.
According to scientists, the main harm of a nuclear bomb is not radiation, but the intense heat and energy spread just after the explosion. For this reason, those cockroaches which were very close to the explosion were also killed immediately. But those who were at a short distance, defeated the radiation and survived.
Why is there no effect of radiation on cockroaches?
The answer to why cockroaches do not die in radiation lies in the specialty of their body cells. In humans, cells divide very frequently, and the faster the cells divide, the more lethal the effect of radiation will be. Whereas in the body of cockroach, this process is very slow, only once a week. For this reason radiation does not harm their cells immediately.
Cockroaches tolerated the explosions in Japan
During the explosions in Japan, the level of gamma rays was recorded at about 10,300 rads. This was a direct message of death for humans, but the cockroach tolerated it too. Therefore, scientists believe that if such an apocalyptic disaster ever occurs on Earth in which humans and large creatures are wiped out, then creatures like cockroaches will survive the longest.
