Can alcohol be taken in train like flight, know what are the rules?

The rules for carrying liquor in trains are easy. Depends on railway rules as well as state liquor laws. Meaning, different laws regarding liquor apply in every state and the rules change as the train passes through those states.

Section 165 of the Railway Act 1989 empowers railway officials to investigate and seize any suspicious or illegal goods. This means that alcohol is not allowed on most Indian Railways routes, even if the bottle is sealed.

Liquor prohibition is in force in some states in India. Like Gujarat, Bihar, Nagaland and Lakshadweep. Buying, selling and carrying liquor are all crimes in these states. So if your train passes through a state where there is a prohibition, carrying alcohol can get you in trouble.

Even if you are coming from a state where alcohol is not banned, it is important to keep some things in mind. Just as the bottle should be sealed, liquor should be used only for personal use and should not be for sale.

It is completely illegal to drink, display or create ruckus while in the train. According to Section 145 of the Railway Act and the Indian Judicial Code, a fine of up to Rs 1000 and a jail term of 6 months can be imposed.

If you enter or pass through a state with a liquor ban, the excise laws of that state apply. These may include arrest, heavy fines and jail sentences.
