Singer Kunal Ganjawala, who gave Bollywood hit songs like ‘O Humdum Soniyo Re’, ‘Tauba Tauba’, ‘Dil Na Diya’ and ‘Bheege Lip Tere’, is once again in the news. Actually, the singer shared the interesting story behind his surname. Due to which users are often seen taunting him on social media.
‘Used to make medicines for cancer patients’
Talking to Times of India, Kunal Ganjawala revealed that, ‘His surname is from the time of British Raj. During the British Raj, our family used to grow marijuana for medical facilities. We had a license. This is to do the work. This was our work before 1942, before the Quit India Movement. We used to make opium injections from it and give it to cancer patients… from then on we got this surname.
Why did the family stop the opium story?,
Singer further said, ‘This work continued till the Quit India Movement, when Mahatma Gandhi urged Indians to become self-reliant. After that, we started making furniture. He admitted that even today people give strange reactions because of his surname.

Kunal said, ‘Sometimes people are surprised to hear my surname, and sometimes they make fun of me. But this is the real history, people used to joke, ‘Hey Ganja seller, what is the goods?’ And I used to tell them that I neither smoke nor eat such things..”

In the year 2004, the song ‘Bheege Lip’ from Emraan Hashmi’s film ‘Murder’ gave Kunal Ganjawala overnight stardom. After this, he gave many hit songs to the industry like Koi Mil Gaya from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, Salame from ‘Dhoom’ and Maula Maula from ‘Singham’. But now he has been away from singing for a long time. Kunal gave his last song An-Ban from Shahrukh Khan’s film ‘Zero’.
