Vitamin D for Heart Attack Prevention: Every day some new revelations keep happening. A new study has revealed that if Vitamin D3 is consumed in a personalized manner according to each person’s blood level, it can almost halve the risk of a second heart attack in people who have previously suffered a heart attack. Research found that in patients whose vitamin D levels were kept balanced, the risk of second heart attack was much less than the control group. What came out in the research?

Vitamin D, commonly known as the sunshine vitamin, is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the body. It keeps bones strong, supports muscle functioning, strengthens the immune system and also controls mood. The body produces this vitamin when our skin is exposed to sunlight. But now scientists believe that its effect is not only limited to bones, but can also have a deep impact on heart health. Previous studies had shown that people who have low levels of Vitamin D have a higher risk of heart disease. Vitamin D affects the elasticity of blood cells, swelling and functioning of arteries, all these factors are very important for heart health. So researchers wondered, if increasing the level of vitamin D in the blood, could it prevent another heart attack?

What answer did you get?

To find the answer to this question, scientists at Intermountain Health started a new study. This included those patients who had recently suffered a heart attack. Researchers first measured the vitamin D levels in each participant’s blood and then adjusted the dosage so that levels remained in the “optimal range” throughout the study. The results were shocking, people who were given this personalized vitamin D3 supplement had about 50 percent less risk of a second heart attack than those who were not given this special care. This study has been presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2025, although it has not yet been published in any peer-reviewed journal.

The average age of the patients included in the trial was 63 years and almost all had recently suffered a heart attack. At the beginning of the study, 87 percent of the participants were found to be vitamin D deficient. Researchers aimed to bring each person’s level up to 40 ng/mL. Initially the average level was only 27 ng/mL. Most patients were given a dose of 5,000 IU D3, which was much higher than the normal recommendation. The results revealed that the incidence of repeat heart attacks was almost halved in the group taking vitamin D3, only 3.8 percent versus 7.9 percent in those who did not take the supplement. Although this treatment could not reduce all types of heart events, reducing the risk of a second heart attack is considered an important discovery in itself. However, if you are deficient in Vitamin D, then consult your doctor and get the correct dosage decided. But remember, Vitamin D3 is not a substitute for treatment, but a support system, which can make your heart stronger from within.
