Under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir, Team India has achieved many big successes in limited overs cricket, but the situation seems completely opposite in Test cricket. After Rahul Dravid stepped down as coach in 2024, Gambhir took charge of India and made a great start by winning the Champions Trophy 2025 and Asia Cup 2025. However, in the meantime, the performance of the Indian team in Test cricket continued to decline, due to which many unwanted and shameful records were created.
1. Defeat at home to New Zealand after 12 years
The defeat against New Zealand in Pune was a big blow for the Indian team. This was India’s first Test defeat on home soil in 12 years. After this, defeats in Bengaluru and Mumbai also made the situation worse. For the first time since 1955, New Zealand created history by winning the Test series in India. India got a 3-0 clean sweep, which happened for the first time in 24 years on home soil.
2. Border-Gavaskar lost the trophy, 10 years of dominance broken
India lost the series 3-1 on the Australia tour. With this, India’s dominance of 10 years was broken. Under Gambhir’s coaching, India lost 6 out of 10 tests this season, which raises questions on the team’s test ability. This is considered to be one of the worst series in India’s BGT history.
3. Out of the World Test Championship final for the first time
For the first time in the history of WTC, India could not reach the final. The 0-3 home defeat to New Zealand and 1-3 overseas defeat to Australia badly affected India’s ranking. Before this, India had played two consecutive finals, but this time the poor performance derailed the team’s campaign.
4. Shameful record in the 21st century
Chasing an easy target of 124 runs against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, India lost by 30 runs. This was India’s first home Test defeat against South Africa in 15 years. What’s more, the Indian team became the only team in the 21st century to lose twice while chasing a target of less than 150.
5. Statistics in home tests are not as strong as before
Under Gambhir’s coaching, India has so far played 8 tests at home, out of which 4 have been lost. Where Team India was once considered invincible on the home ground, now the continuous defeats are increasing the concern.
