Adhik Maas 2026: There are only a few days left for 2026 to start. The next year is going to be very special because in 2026 there will be not 12 but 13 months. Actually, there will be more months this year. In the English calendar it is a leap year and in the Hindi calendar it is an extra month.
When in Adhik Maas 2026?
According to Vikram Samvat Panchang, there will be 13 months in the year 2083, because in the year 2026 of the English calendar, Adhik Maas will start from May 17 and will last till June 15, 2026, i.e. Adhik Maas will fall in the month of Jyeshtha. Adhik Maas has special significance for chanting, penance, worship of Lord Vishnu and pilgrimage.
Why does it take more time?
In Hindi calendar, time calculation is done on the basis of Sun and Moon. When 32 months of the solar month are completed, there are 33 months of the lunar month. There is a difference of 1 month every third year between the solar year and the lunar year.
To eliminate this difference, the system of Adhik Maas was started by the sages. Adhikamas comes once every three years, the year in which Adhikamas occurs is of 13 months.
Why is more month necessary?
Due to more months, the coordination between Hindi calendar and seasons is maintained. If there was no arrangement for more months, then Saavan would come sometimes in winter and sometimes in summer. Holi would have been celebrated in the rain, thus the coordination of the season and the festival would have been disturbed.
Do not do this auspicious work in Adhikamas
More months are not considered auspicious. Due to being dirty, it is called Malmas. In most of the months, auspicious activities like marriage, tonsure, housewarming, yajnopavit, naming, purchase of land, house, initiation of new work are not done.
