Liver Health Warning Signs: Fatty liver, formerly known as NAFLD and now also known as MASLD, is one of the fastest growing diseases in the world today. Its biggest problem is that in the initial stage its symptoms are very mild or are not visible at all. But recent research is showing that its initial signs often start appearing in the stomach and abdominal area, that too slowly and without making any noise.

A study published in the World Journal of Hepatology found that many patients with fatty liver initially report stomach-related symptoms, such as mild pain, flatulence, nausea or heaviness on the right side. Sometimes these symptoms are felt even when blood tests and scans look absolutely normal. That means the body is signaling from within for help.

What is fatty liver?

When excessive fat starts accumulating in the liver and it has no relation to alcohol, then it is called fatty liver. As fat increases, the liver can become enlarged and swollen. For this reason, initial discomfort is often felt around the stomach and not in externally visible symptoms.

Common signs of fatty liver seen in the stomach

Pain or heaviness in the stomach on the right side

The liver is located under your right ribs. When fat increases in it, there is often a mild but persistent pain, discomfort in lying on that side or a feeling of some pressure inside. Often people ignore it considering it to be gas or indigestion.

flatulence and a feeling of being full quickly

Many patients say that even after eating a little, their stomach starts feeling heavy. Which includes swelling in the stomach, gas and belching. All this happens because the slowing capacity of the liver starts affecting digestion.

nausea and indigestion

Due to fatty liver, problems like frequent nausea, feeling heavy in food and mild indigestion are common. The problem increases especially after eating fried or spicy food.

loss of appetite

Many people notice that their appetite is gradually decreasing. Skipping meals, not being able to eat much, or losing weight without effort are signs that the liver and digestion system are under pressure.

Why does fatty liver affect only the stomach?

The liver alone handles almost half of the entire digestion process. It processes nutrients from food, breaks down fat and removes toxins from the body. Therefore, when fat starts accumulating in the liver and its work stops, its direct effect starts appearing on the stomach and digestion. In the beginning of fatty liver, the liver starts swelling slightly. Due to this, digestion starts slowing down, bile production starts decreasing and gas, heaviness, flatulence and discomfort increases. This is the reason why the initial symptoms of fatty liver are mostly felt around the stomach. Experts believe that if these stomach-related signs are identified in time, then fatty liver can be prevented from reaching a serious stage.

Important things to pay attention to

Some daily habits make a big difference in preventing fatty liver. The most important steps are to reduce processed and oily foods, exercise regularly, keep weight under control and limit sugar and fried foods. If gas, heaviness or frequent discomfort in the stomach persists for a long time, it is important to consult a doctor. Timely checkups and small changes in lifestyle can prevent fatty liver in its early stages and protect liver health for a long time.
