Allegations of marriage and immigration fraud against Somalia-born Minnesota MP Ilhan Omar for seeking US citizenship have resurfaced and this time MAGA supporters are demanding her deportation from the US. Let us tell you that these claims first came to light in 2016 and are related to her marriage in 2009 to Ahmed Noor Saeed Elmi, who is said to be her brother.
These allegations have again come into limelight a few days after US President Donald Trump mentioned Omar’s background last week. Trump also alleged that Ilhan Omar had come to America illegally after marrying her brother. Trump has reiterated his hardline immigration rhetoric after an Afghan civilian shot two National Guard soldiers near the White House, calling it a conspiracy.
Demand for action from Homeland Security Department
After these allegations of Trump, pictures of Omar’s marriage records started being shared on social media. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is being demanded to take immediate action. Let us tell you that Omar has already faced criticism for his anti-India foreign policy. In 2022, he visited Pakistan occupied Kashmir and met local leaders. New Delhi had condemned his four-day visit to PoK, during which he accused India of human rights violations in Kashmir.
Campaign to expel Omar from America
Now that the controversy surrounding their marriage is rising, the question is, can an elected representative be deported from the US? Dozens of people shared evidence on social media alleging that Omar had committed fraud. A post by @Chicago1Ray that was reposted more than 12,000 times and viewed more than 3.46 lakh times. It says evidence shows Ilhan Omar married her brother Ahmed Noor Saeed Elmi and he helped her obtain US citizenship, a crime.
