Diamond Types: Although all types of diamonds shine beautifully, they are not all the same. Their origin, chemistry, purity and workmanship can be quite different. Let us tell you that different types of diamonds are made which have their own special characteristics and price. Let us know how many types of diamonds there are and what is the difference between them.

Natural Diamonds and Lab Grown Diamonds

Diamonds are broadly divided into natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds. Natural diamonds are formed under extreme pressure and heat inside the earth over billions of years. Being natural, they often contain some impurities like nitrogen or boron. These impurities also affect their colour. On the other hand, lab grown diamonds are made in a controlled environment using technologies like HPHT i.e. High Pressure High Temperature or Chemical Vapor Deposition. Although they are made in the lab, yet they have the same chemical and physical properties as natural diamonds. Their price is also determined by quality parameters like clarity, cut, color and carat weight.

chemical type

Diamonds are divided into chemical types based on the elements trapped inside them during their formation. As:

Type Ia and Ib

Many natural diamonds fall into the Type Ia category. Here nitrogen atoms are present in clusters inside the structure. It often looks yellow or brown. Type Ib hero also contains nitrogen but this nitrogen is in the form of separate atoms due to which it often has a dark yellow color.

Type IIa

There are no impurities in this diamond. It is absolutely clean and precious. Famous diamonds like Kohinoor belong to this category. These are very transparent due to which they are considered rare.

Type IIb

When boron gets mixed into the structure of diamond, it produces blue or gray color. These types of diamonds are very rare and are conductors of electricity.

difference in colors

Let us tell you that color is one of the most special characteristics of diamond. But colorless diamonds are the rarest and most expensive. The color of yellow or brown diamonds is due to the impurity of nitrogen. Along with this, the color of blue diamond comes from boron and rare diamonds like pink, red, green are very rare and their price is also very high.
