UP Police has filed a charge sheet in a local court against Maulvi Taukir Raza and 37 others, the main accused in the violence that took place on September 26 in Bareilly. Baradari police station has filed a charge sheet against Ittehad-e-Millat Council chairman Raza, his close aide Nafees and others, while investigation is ongoing in nine other related cases in which Raza’s name is also involved, officials said on Monday.
It is alleged that this violence broke out on September 26 over the controversy related to the “I Love Muhammad” poster. According to the police, mobs gathered at several places in the city, threw petrol bombs at policemen, pelted stones and fired shots and looted weapons including riot control guns. More than two dozen policemen were injured in this unrest.
That night, 10 cases were registered in Kotwali, Baradari, Premnagar, Cantt and Kila police stations. The investigation of the two main cases registered in Kotwali and Baradari was later handed over to the Crime Branch. Senior Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya said that after the arrest in the Baradari case, 38 accused including Maulana Tauqeer Raza were sent to jail and after the completion of the investigation, the charge sheet was filed in the court on Saturday.
Arya said, “Investigation in the remaining cases is being expedited. Efforts are on to identify the unknown accused. All the identified accused will be sent to jail and no innocent person will be harassed. Police said that initially 19 accused were named in this case, while during the investigation, 55 more names came to light. Out of these, charge sheet has been filed against 38 accused along with evidence. Police said that Maulvi Tauqeer Raza is currently lodged in Fatehgarh jail, while Nafees and many other accused are lodged in Bareilly jail.
