Why Boredom Is Important: We all want to take out some time from our busy routine and relax ourselves, sometimes by watching movies, sometimes by reading books, sometimes by cooking or by meeting friends. But to be honest, hardly anyone finds time for ‘doing nothing’ or just getting bored. In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, our mind is always occupied with something or the other and social media makes the biggest contribution in this. We spend even a little free time scrolling or watching web series.
But experts believe that if you really want to do something good for your mind and health, then being a little bored can also prove beneficial. Dr. Jyotsna Bakshi, Senior Fellow and Psychologist, DIPAS, New Delhi, explained why we should allow ourselves to be bored sometimes and what positive effects it can have on the brain. According to Dr. Joshi, being constantly on smartphones and social media is harming our mental health, it increases stress, distracts attention, reduces creativity and gradually people also become victims of addiction.
If you give yourself time by staying away from friends, responsibilities and phone for a while, it improves your mood, your mind becomes more creative and stress also reduces.
These are the benefits of being bored-
get rid of tech addiction
Smartphone addiction can make you restless, sometimes people also feel the illusion of hearing the phone ringing without any reason. Excessive screen time can cause problems like depression, anxiety, poor sleep and decline in studies. Being a little bored increases neuroplasticity in the brain, which is especially important in children and adolescents. So even if you have five minutes, put the phone away and go the old-fashioned way, draw something, write, fantasize or just sit comfortably with music.
creativity increases
Don’t consider being bored a waste of time. It lightens the mind and gives it space for new thoughts. When you keep yourself away from gadgets for a while, the brain becomes active to learn and think new things, which increases creativity.
Opportunity to discover new hobbies and interests
Boredom gives you time to look within yourself and discover new interests. When you have ‘me time’ with just yourself, many new hobbies and talents emerge that you might have missed in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The mind becomes calm and aware
Doing nothing is actually the beginning of peace and mindfulness. Focusing on yourself in the present moment improves sleep, balances emotions and makes you positive. It can also be helpful in weight loss efforts.
stress is reduced
Being bored gives the brain a chance to reset. When you separate yourself from the routine for a while, mental fatigue reduces and thinking becomes fresh. With this, happiness, success and better mental health all become possible in the future.
