‘In Vande Mataram, Maa Durga is there and for Muslims only Allah…’, what did Arshad Madani say about the national anthem?

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani’s reaction has come regarding Vande Mataram. He said that he has no objection to reciting or singing Vande Mataram, but a Muslim worships only one Allah and a Muslim cannot include anyone other than Allah in his worship.

On completion of 150 years of Vande Mataram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the discussion in the Lok Sabha on Monday (December 8, 2025) and discussion on this issue can also start in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Arshad Madani gave his reaction on this issue on social media platform X. He said, ‘The translation of Vande Mataram is based on beliefs related to Shirk, in its four verses the country has been considered a deity and compared to Durga Mata and words of worship have been used. Also mother, I worship you. This is the meaning of Vande Mataram.

Maulana Arshad Madani, while explaining the meaning of Vande Mataram, said that it is against the religious faith of any Muslim, hence no one can be forced to sing any slogan or song against his faith. He said that the Constitution of India gives religious freedom (Article 25) and freedom of expression (Article 19) to every citizen.

Arshad Madani said, ‘Loving the country is one thing, worshiping it is a different thing. Muslims…’ He said that no one can be forced to sing slogans or songs against his faith.

Participating in a special discussion in Parliament on Vande Mataram, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that independence came to India because we did not make the country and religion one. He said that the government should not force it, if it does so then it will be against the Constitution.

Owaisi said that those who did not take part in the War of Independence, today are talking about love for the country. He said that if patriotism is to be shown then poverty should be ended. Taking aim at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he asked whether they want to make Vande Mataram a test of loyalty. On the issue of singing or chanting Vande Mataram, he said, ‘We do not worship our mother, we do not even worship the Quran and there is no God except Allah in Islam.’
